Ten years ago, a member of our community walked away from everything—his home, his business, and an emotionally and physically violent relationship. The toll on his mental health was devastating, making it impossible for him to work. His only source of income became the Disability Support Pension.

At first, ‘Kevin’ was able to secure a modest rental unit at an affordable price. But as the housing crisis on the Northern Beaches deepened, his rent steadily climbed, eventually exceeding his income. Terrified of becoming homeless, he felt paralysed, unable to find a more affordable place to live. To bridge the gap, he began drawing from his superannuation—funds meant for his future—just to keep a roof over his head.

For years, he lived in constant fear of his super running out, with nowhere to turn. That’s when he reached out to Local Kind.

With the advocacy and support of our Homeless Support team, he was prioritised for social housing and moved into a secure, affordable unit this week. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure the transition was as smooth as possible, from securing removalist support to helping him settle into his new home.

Now, for the first time in a decade, he no longer has to live in fear of homelessness. Instead, he can focus on healing from a lifetime of trauma, grief, and loss.
