After 26 years of enduring physical abuse, sexual abuse, and coercive control, Olivia reached out to LocalKind. She presented to our Drop-In with her young child, not knowing where else to turn. Our team at LocalKind provided a safe space for Olivia to understand the high-risk situation she was in. Living with her abuser, even after a separation and fearing for her life and her child’s, she was trapped in a cycle of fear and control, unable to pursue her passions or live freely. We offered a trauma-informed approach, focusing on safety planning, emotional and practical support, and empowering her to make her own choices. She recognised her situation when shown the ‘Power and Control Wheel’ and the ‘Cycle of Abuse’ along with other forms of DFV.
For the first time in years, Olivia felt heard and believed, a crucial step in her recovery. LocalKind’s commitment extended beyond initial support. We assisted Olivia through complex legal proceedings, provided access to counseling, secured financial aid, and got her and her child accommodation in an emergency shelter. Olivia’s words, “I would still be living in fear if I had not come to LocalKind…you have changed my life,” explain why we’re so passionate about the work that we do, and show LocalKind’s impact on lives. We are dedicated to giving back voice and choice, ensuring survivors like Olivia can build safe, hopeful futures.
